IM HOME

The most compelling thing about lorine Niedecker’s poetry is, that she always writes about her home town.  She wrote a lot of poems In the comfort of her cabin home on Black Hawk Island. I would like to quote lines from one of Lorine’s poems called “ I Lost You To Water Summer”.

She says “when the young girls swim to the hot shore” then, goes on to say “now to is cold” meaning it is now winter time. This reminds me of my home town, Milwaukee WI. So many times I’ve seen the summer time being killed by fall and winter.

In the summer time everyone goes to the lake, to get away from the heat. It’s fun to watch the people swim and have fun. Then the winter comes and swimmers turn into ice skaters. There is snow everywhere but, we still find a way to have fun even In the cold.

In many poems she talks about her rural surroundings.  The river, the animals, the trees are things that are all a part of her when she is writing. She used the  sights, the sounds, and the smells around her to give the reader a vision of her home on Black Hawk Island.

Why Change What Sells?

My point of this whole blog is, some of us are not immune to the power of ads. Every time we take a look around we see another message to buy something- soap, cologne, clothes. We don’t even have time to stop and think about what the ad is really selling- sex. From what to eat, what to wear, what to drive, even how we look, is advertised on everyday billboards.
This is the power of advertising.
Yes some, maybe even most of these ads are demeaning to females. Some are even demeaning to males. Like the MTV ad with the young woman. Her breasts are exposed and the word “Bitch” is copied over her breasts. There’s even the Calvin Klein jeans ad with a man in the nude having his genitals covered by the jeans. These are the type of things thought to be “demeaning.”
I like to buy old spice body spray often. When I see the ads on TV with the women all over a man who uses the spray- I don’t think twice about it. I’m not saying it works how they portray it on TV, but woman do often note on the smell and that they like it. So the advertisement isn’t demeaning, it is just an over dramatized truth.

I don’t think these ads will ever change, and frankly I don’t think they should. Most people respond to it by buying the advertised item. So why change what sells?

On The Ball

Just started college and I need to stay on the ball.  Everything is new to me new city, new people, new basketball coach. I need to stay on the ball.  I want to go out and see the wonders of this small city of Manitowoc, but I need to stay on the ball. I meet new people and make new friends that want to go out, or just have a good time, but I have to stay on the ball.
